Additional Discussion from July 2025: Custodians of Wonder
Right after the book club discussion I thought of something to share in response to Rachel's question. I feel like I am of a generation that has lost a lot of the history and culture of the past generations since I have failed to learn Spanish. I am of the first generation from my mother's side of the family that Spanish was not the first language learned. While I have tried to learn Spanish even taking four semesters in college it just didn't stick. Even if it did stick there would still have been issues. What I was taught in college here in Southern New Mexico was the Mexican dialect of Spanish. What my mother grew up with was a Central New Mexican dialect of Spanish that tends to be closer to European Spanish than Mexican Spanish. This can be a bit of a challenge for me at times to be able to relate to family. It's even gotten to the point where a co-worker has told me that I am Hispanic because I am unable to speak Spanish and am fair skinned.
